What is Malaria Prophylaxis?

Malaria Prophylaxis is the preventive treatment of Malaria. The prophylaxis usually starts three weeks before the travel start in a lower dose of one malaria drug tablet a day. In most malaria-endemic regions, Malarone and Mefloquine are frequently used drugs for malaria prevention.

How tropical doctors in Switzerland advise on Malaria Prophylaxis?

During my trip planning in 2003, I was told to consult a tropical doctor and seek advice on Malaria Prophylaxis and other recommended vaccinations for the trip.

I did as I was told! Of course, as a Swiss Citizen, we are trained to follow such rules. The tropical doctor asks me where I plan to travel to, and I told him about my plans to visit Kenya. The goal was to fly to Nairobi, visit friends in Mombasa at the coast, and end the journey in Eldoret, in the Kenyan highlands.

He recommended the vaccination for yellow-fever, hepatitis A/B and, of course, the Malaria Prophylaxis using Malarone, a common Malaria drug until today.

That’s what I did, and I had big regrets for years!

My personal Malaria Prophylaxis nightmare with the Malarone Malaria drug

We started our holiday journey and went directly to Mombasa to visit a friend. He invited us to his house, and we had the time of our life. It’s a beautiful place on the coast of Mombasa. We enjoyed the beautiful beaches close to the famous Diani Beach.

I was a good boy, taking my Malarone Malaria Prophylaxis every day as recommended.

After 17 Days, I fall sick!

Our host looked at the symptoms and said; my friend, you have Malaria; you need to go to the hospital! I had a high fever, I was shivering from the cold, and it was 30°C hot outside, and I had this bitter taste in my mouth. Clear indications of Malaria.

My friend drove me to the hospital, and they checked my blood. Diagnosis Malaria, what a shock!

What?, why, but I have taken Malarone as Prophylaxis!

When I started my Malaria Prophylaxis story, the doctor started laughing and said. That’s what they tell all the tourists. But what the tropical doctors in Switzerland usually don’t know is which Malaria drug is working here in Kenya.

It happens all the time, he said!!!

So what next, I asked him? He replied we give you a shot “Injection of a Malaria Drug” for three days. You have to come back every day for it.

That’s what we did, three bad holiday days! But it worked out, and from the second day on, I started feeling better. The doctors in Mombasa deal with Malaria every day, and they know what works.

But that was not the end of the story! Unfortunately not!

Having frequent crazy heart banging after my return from holiday

Quite immediately after my holiday, I started experiencing terrifying heart banging several times a week. I never had that before.

When consulting our family doctor, he recommended revisiting the tropical doctor that gave me the Malaria Prophylaxis and the other vaccines before my holidays.

I went back to the tropical doctor in Switzerland and explained my unpleasant experience in Kenya and how “good” the Prophylaxis against Malaria worked for me. I mentioned the heart banging that I experience since returning from holiday.

What came next was the most stupid statement I ever heard! It made me mad!

He asked me “very innocently”;

Didn’t you read the Malarone package leaflet with the prescription and the possible side effects?

What the f***!!!

I asked him, is this all you have to say? You better give me a solution to my heart banging problem!

Yeah, it’s not the first time I feel, as some drugs are meant to make us sick.

The truth is, I was reading the Malarone prescription and possible side effects. At least the first few lines, before I decided to stop.

It reads like a death sentence! You feel you might be dead in a week when you use it.

I don’t have a package leaflet at hand, as I have never used a conventional Malaria drug since then, even living here in Kenya for more than 10 Years. I found better ways to deal with Malaria, actually several different ways that work well.

Known side effects of Malarone (atovaquone / proguantil) oral tablet

I refer you here to a website, which indicates the full range of possible side effects and marks them in three groups:

It is essential to name the very severe possible side effects of Malarone. It will most likely ensure that you don’t fall into the trap I deed!

There are better and safe options, and I will share them with you at the end of this post.

Read the following medical advice!!! I say, don’t use it in any case!

Along with its needed effects, “Malarone” atovaquone/proguanil may cause some unwanted effects. However, not all of these side effects may occur. If they do occur, they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur while taking atovaquone / proguanil:

Possible side effects:

Blistering, peeling, loosening of the skin
Chills
Convulsions
Difficulty swallowing
Fast heartbeat
Hives or welts
Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight
Itching, redness, or other discoloration of the skin
Joint or muscle pain
Massive, hive-like swelling on face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, sex organs
Loss of bladder control
Muscle spasm or jerking of all extremities
Puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
Rash
Red, irritated eyes
Red skin lesions, often with a purple center
Seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there
Severe mental changes
Severe sunburn
Shortness of breath
Skin rash
Sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on lips
Sudden loss of consciousness
Tightness in chest
Unusual tiredness or weakness
Wheezing

The nightmare of a good friend by using Malarone Malaria Prophylaxis

Let me try to keep this one short!

A friend and customer of mine from Switzerland traveled on Safari to South Africa. He followed the same advice as me and used Malarone Malaria Prophylaxis.

He was a bodybuilder, a big and strong man. It was a nightmare!

Already during the holiday, he fell into a deep depression, panic attacks, heart banging like me. He never had anything like that before!

Why I don’t recommend malaria prophylaxis to my visitors in Eldoret, Kenya

Since I settled in Kenya, I stay in a cute town in Western Kenya called Eldoret. Eldoret and Iten are mainly known for their runners, and it’s also the food basket of Kenya. Eliud Kipchoge, Brigid Jepscheschir Kosgei, Paul Kibii Tergat, David Lekuta Rudisha are widely ruling the game of middle and long-distance running in this world today.

One of the reasons for their success is the altitude of Eldoret. Eldoret is located 2000 to 2200 meters above sea level. Their lungs got a higher capability from the training in this environment. Today, runners from all over the world come here for training and benefit from this environment.

So what has this to do with Malaria and Malaria Prophylaxis?

Mosquitos are unlikely to spread Malaria at high altitude. The transmission does not occur at altitudes above 2000 to 2500 meters over sea level and temperatures below 16°C or greater than 33°C. This is due to the interruption of the malaria parasite sexual cycle in the mosquito due to low temperature.

When friends arrive from Europe, they usually land in Nairobi at an altitude of 1750 meters over sea level and travel by another flight to Eldoret. It is possible to catch Malaria in Nairobi and in some cases also in Eldoret, but using Malaria Prophylaxis for that risk is for me and my experience an overkill.

Consider Artimesia based Malaria drugs or use the Artimesia plant

Years ago, the Artimesia plant was discovered and recognized as an efficient way to treat Malaria successfully. You can read more about it here.

There are today malaria drugs based on the essence of the Artimesia plant called Artemisinin.

If you need or like to go for a malaria drug, look for Artimesia based ones.

I planted the Artimesia bush some years back behind our house. We treated Malaria very useful by only making tea from the plant. Usually, after two days, Malaria ended without any side effects.

That’s a great solution that worked for me! But I give you another even better one.
